I lived in Hervanta for a semester while I was studying in Tampere. It was a culture shock for sure to live there, I don't remember how many times I was shushed in the bus just for having a conversation with a friend. I don't know how different Brits are from Finns but it sounds like the culture shock is there for sure.
Loved the suspense, can't wait for the next part. Cheers!
Thanks, Walther. I work in Tampere sometimes. Lovely city. Where are you now? P.S. I just checked my recommendations, thanks so much for adding me to your list! Very kind of you.
I’ll add a comment to this reply with my thoughts on the piece after I read/listen later tonight, but jumping in now to say OMG what is with that elevator warning poster!
Are you testing ideas in your Substack for the memoir, or using bits of the memoir for the Substack, or are they not related at all?
Either way, this was fantastic. Great intro and lead into the story. Like most brilliant life twists, I did not see the connection between the snus ass-slapper and your new boss coming at all. Well written and infused with the emotion that's become one of your many core talents. Really looking forward to the next one.
Also: I listened to half of this, read the other half. I enjoy both and if you're wondering if you should keep doing the audio versions - my vote is yes please do! You're also messing with video for the recipes, did I read that somewhere?
Aah, thank you, Taegan. My Substack is entirely separate from the memoir I've written though. For me this newsletter is functioning as a first draft of what I'm working out might one day be a memoir of its own. A very different process but very positive.

I've been in Phoenix, Arizona for a little over a decade. And you're welcome!

Haha, it's brilliant isn't it.
Oh, man that ending!

Oh and yes, my video experiment comes maybe next week. Just a matter of finding time to stitch it together.
