Oh Wil as always your words are good, but this time wow. You are so right with the way we experience love or lack of it and how we then share and show our love. You’ve given me ideas for a substack piece of my own sometime. Thank you as ever.

Emigrating to another country sounds so romantic to many. And for those of us who did manage to find the courage to follow a calling (usually involving love), the romance of the move never really works out like we thought. There are always those little surprises—different for everyone—that are more challenging to deal with than we probably thought. I think you captured that essence quite well...

Thank you for the acknowledgment, Will! This piece was beautifully written. I laughed at some bits (your mom’s harumphs over your honesty about her attempts at Finnish) and felt the longing and nostalgia in the rest.

Also, I was very excited about the tea smoked mackerel until I read how it’s prepared and the results 😂 I don’t know much about the smoking process, but I wonder if marinating it in actual tea or a tea-infused oil, then smoking it would get the flavor but not the burnt-crispy taste of burning the tea leaves?
